Tear duct blockage can be caused by a number of issues including age, tumors, allergies, and more. Some people are born with tear duct drainage problems and cannot effectively drain tears that build-up in the eyes. This can result in too much water in the eyes and can lead to blurred vision. For some people, tearing problems can result from other eye issues such as eyelid deformities and dry eye.
To treat tear duct problems, our surgeons can provide a variety of solutions. The most common and least invasive option is to create a small opening in the patient’s nose. This is known as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). Another solution used in more severe cases is to insert an artificial tear duct (Jones tube) that connects the eyelid to the nose. If not treated, tear duct blockage can create painful eye infections and irritation.
