Disorders present at birth and in children can be the most stressful type of disorder for our tiny patients and their loved ones. We strive to make every child feel comfortable at Eyelid & Facial Consultants. Our experienced surgeons use the most advanced surgical techniques available so you can be assured that your loved one is receiving the best possible care.
Common disorders affecting newborns include:
Eye Socket Disorders
Eye socket disorders–such as those resulting from completely missing tissue, partially missing tissue, malformed eyes, and orbital tumors–can be found before or after birth. To treat a small or defective socket, our surgeons use a procedural method that creates normal bone growth by expanding the eye socket. Artificial eyes or ocular prosthesis are most commonly used as a way to replace missing or damaged eyes. For the treatment of tumors, our surgeons carefully make incisions in skin creases to minimize scarring to remove the mass. All of these methods are extremely successful and help to decrease patient recovery.
Eyelid Disorders:
To treat eyelid disorders, our surgeons try to correct the eyelid by restoring it to its natural state. This allows for optimal vision, appearance, comfort, and protection for the eye. Eyelid disorders include malformed eyelids, ptosis, eyelid fusion, ectropion, epiblepharon and entropion.
Tear Drainage (Lacrimal) System Disorders:
Tear duct problems are a common eye disorder found at birth. There are several different ways to treat a clogged or undeveloped tear duct. First, our surgeons will investigate the cause of the tear drainage problem by inspecting the tear duct while the patient undergoes anesthesia. Once the cause of the issue is identified, the surgeon will perform another procedure to correct the problem. The most common solution is a tear duct bypass surgery (Dacryocystorhinostomy – DCR) whereby the surgeon creates a small opening in the patient’s nose for the tears to drain. Another solution used in more severe cases is to implant an artificial tear duct (Jones tube). Both procedures are highly successful in restoring the patient’s tear drainage system.
