Inflammation of the large arteries of the head and face can cause a variety of problems including: occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel) and ischema (tissue death). Headaches, soreness around the temporal arteries, and certain blood tests can all point to this inflammation. If left untreated, this condition can ultimately affect one’s vision.
Temporal arteritis, as this inflammation is most often called, is typically diagnosed with a biopsy, whereby the surgeon removes a small part of inflamed vessel to examine it. Usually, the surgeon makes a small incision on the scalp above the ear, cuts out some of the tissue, and sends it to a lab to be further analyzed.
