Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner eyelid. The inner eyelid becomes dry and often a crusty layer will form. People affected by ectropion may develop blurred vision which will typically worsen over time. Because the inner eyelid is exposed, the eye is prone to infection.
Patients should try to keep the effected eye well lubricated. Our specialists recommend artificial tears initially followed by surgery to correct the ectropion. If not properly treated, ectropion can cause serious eye damage and could even lead to the loss of an eye. It is important to treat ectropion early.
